Jean Calvin

1509 – 1564

A Protestant minister who founded his own branch of reformist Christianity, Jean Calvin most famously introduced the concept of ‘Predestination’ i.e. that every human being’s life had been planned by God before their birth. In this sense, Calvin preached that people were either irrevocably good or bad, therefore ‘predestined’ for salvation (heaven) or damnation (hell). He became leader of the local Protestant church in Geneva in 1541.

jcThe Institutes of the Christian Religion (1536)

  • The Bible is the final authority in all religious matters.
  • Only Baptism & Eucharist are true sacraments
  • Transubstantiation is refuted by Calvin: the bread & wine of the Eucharist do NOT become the body & blood of Christ, as taught by the Catholic Church.
  • Everyone’s life is planned before birth by God – Predestination.
